Top-flight hotel industry technology executives and service providers at the 2007 Hotel Technology Next Generation (HTNG) members’ meeting and conference in Lausanne (see photo gallery) were the first to be treated to the new Hotel Technology SMARTreport by Cleverdis.

The event, held at the Ecole Hôtelière de Lausanne, was the gathering point for senior industry professionals in the fields of In-room Technology, Distribution Content Management, Property Distribution, Web Services and Architecture from around the world.

The HTNG workgroups dedicated to each of these fields presented their latest findings and updates, and the first European chapter meeting of the in-room technology workgroup also took place.

Highlights of the event included a roundtable entitled, “Deploying Converged Networks in Hotels”, with speakers including Fraser Hickox, Peninsula Group Hotels; Nick Price, Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group; Brian Steele, Jireh-Tek and Jeremy Ward, JJW Hotels & Resorts.

Thought leadership was very much the order of the day, with presentations including:

  • “Software Security – Building Security In” by Gary McGraw (PhD), Cigital;
  • “The Changing Face of Data Protection” by Rosemary Jay, Pinsent Masons;
  • “RFID and Near Field Communications” by Martin Powell, The Human Chain;
  • “Achieving Vendor Cooperation in Building Next Generation Technology” by James Simkins, MTM Luxury Lodging;
  • and “Generation Y and Preparing for Tomorrow’s Hotel Experience" by Amy Vickers, Avenue A/Razorflash.

Cleverdis’ new publication covers the same areas outlined in the conference, including In-Room Entertainment Technologies, Communication Technologies, Conference Technologies, Digital Signage, CRM, GDS and PMS, Reservation and Revenue Management, In House Automation (Housekeeping, etc.) and Security.

According to SMARTreport Editor in Chief, Richard Barnes, “With annual spending worldwide on hotel technologies estimated at more than 20-billion euros, the hospitality market is one of the most important sectors for technology spending. The march of technology in the hotel industry is increasing in pace, meaning the need not only for IT managers, but also for hotel management in general to follow developments is stronger than ever.

With well over 100 different categories of systems used within hotels, some of them needing to interact, it’s becoming increasingly important to find the right technology vendors and solutions providers, and to better understand business models. In the SMARTreport, we aim to demystify the business as much as possible, giving readers what they need to know about the technology and about the key market players and solutions available to them in a simple, synthetic, exhaustive and objective way.
